Workshop 1: Thur 9th – Sat 11th July
Jonathan Burrows &  Matteo Fargion

A workshop focussing on discussion leading to practical work in the studio.  Emphasis will be towards investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance can be made and what it can communicate to someone watching.  Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to find material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and make them care what happens next.  Days will be punctuated also with viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can’t do. This workshop is for artists with experience of performing and making, who are interested in re-examining and extending their own process and practice.

Workshop 2: Sun 12th -Tue 14th July
Eva Karczag & Chris Crickmay
“When I see what I say” *
This workshop builds upon several years of collaboration in performance between visual artist, Chris Crickmay and dance artist, Eva Karczag.  The emphasis is upon collaboration through movement improvisation and the use of objects and environments in performance. The work will be accessible to people with an interest in improvisation and collaboration in performance from a variety of backgrounds. Previous movement and/or art experience is helpful but not essential.
The intention of the work is to make links not just between art forms, but also between a persons own personal world and what they create. We will explore how our own imaginative worlds can emerge and become clearer to us through interaction with others and with our surroundings. The workshop will give space both for individual and ensemble investigations and will lead to the development of small group performances.
Each individual will be encouraged to attend to ongoing sensory, kinesthetic and imaginative experiencing as a source for working. Explorations in writing and speaking will accompany this work.

* title derived from a statement by Gertrude Stein – “I know what I think when I see what I say”  – a remark that sits well with improvisation as an approach to working.

Workshop 3: Wed 15th- Fri 17th July
Gravity Interdisciplinary Dance/Performance Company:
• Jess Curtis
Choreographer/Performer Germany/USA
• Claire Cunningham Dancer/Vocalist/Aerialist Scotland
• Maria Francesca Scaroni Dancer/Installation Artist/Writer Germany/USA

Working Together
An exploration of inter-disciplinary group collaboration rooted in Gravity’s experiences creating four award-winning performances. We will look at strategies and methodologies for generating and editing physical, textual, musical and post dramatic performance action, de-constructing myths of solo authorship as well as simplistic illusions about equality, democracy and collective decision-making. Our work proposes the body as the site of contact, meeting along multiple axes of difference including, but not limited to, artistic discipline, mobility, gender, nationality, class and physical practice. The class material will be accessible to people with physical impairments. Please feel free to contact us in advance with any questions regarding access or mobility issues.

1 workshop: £150 ∗ 2 workshops: £245 ∗ 3 workshops: £325
The cost for artists supported by institutions or organisations is available on request.

Some bursaries are available towards the cost of fees and expenses. Applications will be accepted from all artists, although priority will be given to people based in Glasgow and the Highlands & Islands.
