Playful Physics
A Contact Improvisation workshop with Robert Anderson and Karl Jay-Lewin
28th-29th November

A workshop both for those new to contact and for more experienced dancers who want to deepen their study of the principles that underlie a contact dance.
“Karl and Robert work brilliantly together, I enjoyed their teaching especially as a Contact Improvisation newbie …” New Year Event 08/09 participant
Contact improvisation is a dance based on the physics of touch, balance, weight, momentum, flow and resistance. It has been variously described as “an art sport”, “a game with two winners” and “a physical conversation”. Contact dances can range from the quietly meditative to the exuberantly acrobatic, from using little or light touch to sending weight through a partner’s body to fly.
The weekend will begin with visiting some of the fundamentals of the form such as physical listening, organisation of the body, and weight exchange. Then we’ll look at ways to open and expand our dancing, to develop confidence and trust as we take the dance further off balance and higher through the air.
Sunday’s session will be devoted to Skills for Jamming and getting the dances we want. How do we prepare our senses to navigate space through and around other bodies? How do we maintain our sense of self within a myriad of choices?
Working with these skills we’ll develop our ability to be seen, to respond and initiate action – composing in the moment – by letting go of the barriers to our natural, playful, expressive selves.
Cost: w/e workshop £100, limited concessions available at £80, group booking discount on full price available to non-Findhorn residents.
