Invitation to a 5Rhythms weekend for women to nurture and celebrate our sacred sexuality. Enter the Secret Garden and explore, through dance and ritual, the richness of being a woman. Our body and sexuality is strongly connected to the rhythm of nature, it is a natural source of energy and pleasure. In our busy lives we easily lose touch with this sacred connection to our deepest selves. When we reconnect with the power of our sexuality we feel the vitality of being alive and all aspects of our lives are nourished.

The 5 Rhythms are a transformative way of reconnecting all the parts of us that become fragmented; healing and guiding us towards wholeness. It’s an improvised dance practise with limitless possibilities. It helps us to release stories and energies which block our natural energy. In the dance we move our struggles and challenges as well as our joy and pleasure. The dance floor is a safe place to experiment with the different shapes of our energy; wild, tender, passionate, vulnerable, playful, innocent, sensual, creative… By bringing awareness, movement and an open heart into forgotten places we become our own healers.

The power of a women’s circle is to embrace and celebrate each other as women, so we can step forward into the mystery that we are and enter our own Secret Garden. Every woman who loves to dance and is willing to explore is welcome, no matter what age or level of experience.
A healing journey through the 5Rhythms® with Jonathan Horan, Gabrielle Roth’s son and closest collaborator.

This is a 5Rhythms® workshop for both advanced and beginning students. The 5Rhythms are a contemporary medicine wheel and Medicine Dance is a journey through the primary maps of the wheel — Waves, Heartbeat and Cycles — nourishing the warrior-healer that is alive in each of us. Dancing for oneself, for each other, for our families, and for our communities is powerful medicine, a way to create a loving ripple effect in this world.

We each possess a fierce wisdom that only comes from within. To practice getting out of its way, getting into our groove and stripping away the things that are blocking its blossoming is our medicine. Taking refuge from the world of doing to truly connect with our deepest self, to hook up to the divine force that moves all things and become deeply rooted in the mysterious workings of our inner worlds, is holy work that feeds the soul.

In the training process, this workshop will count as two days of Waves, one day of Heartbeat, and one day of Cycles.

“Jonathan grew up in the womb of this work, inhaled its essence and now exhales it effortlessly in his life, his work, his dance.

Thus, he infuses the work with a depth that often takes my breath away. His teaching is an amazing mix of honesty, humor, humility, vulnerability and fearlessness. A gentle warrior and, truly, a wounded healer, he has one of the biggest hearts I’ve ever met. He is both my most devoted apprentice and my most profound teacher.” - Gabrielle Roth

There are no pre-requisites for attending this workshop, but participants must have experience in 5Rhythms classes.

Cost: £360 including one vegetarian meal per day. 10% early booking discount if booked by 11th January 2010
The practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the parts of the body and between our movements and the breath, the ground and the space around us. Gradually a new network of muscles is brought into use. Then our movements come from the spine and bring us back to the spine and the whole body pulls together. Vanda’s knowledge developed from initial study with Iyengar and Desikachar. Her own distinctive approach to yoga evolved throughout the rest of her life.

“Diane Long and Sophy Hoare both worked closely with Vanda Scaravelli. Diane was her pupil for 23 years, and Sophy studied with Vanda regularly for 8 years. Sophy and Diane met through Vanda and continue to work and teach together to deepen their practice.
Since Vanda’s death in 1999 her legacy has continued through Diane and Sophy. What she gave carries on developing because it was not a set of instructions, but a feeling of curiosity for what the practice can show us.” Ed Fellows

About this approach to yoga:
The emphasis is not on achieving postures but using them to undo tension and find integration. The practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the parts of the body and between our movements and the breath, the ground and the space around us. Gradually a new network of muscles is brought into use. Then our movements come from the spine and bring us back to the spine and the whole body pulls together. We train our attention so that we can feel more, impose less, and allow the intelligence of the body to reveal itself.

The workshop will run between 9am and approximately 1pm each day with a couple of optional afternoon discussions. Each morning participants will attend two, 1.5 hour classes – one taught by Diane and one taught by Sophy. The group will be divided into two halves to allow greater contact time with the teachers.

Cost: £200 for the four days.

Concessionary rates are not available for this workshop

Priority will be given to those booking for all four days, but some daily places may be available at £60 per day.

Sophy Hoare: I went to my first yoga class in 1970 at the former Dance Centre in Floral Street, Covent Garden. The teacher was Penny Nield-Smith, a student of B.K.S. Iyengar. Penny mainly taught large classes for the London adult education authority and never taught ‘advanced’ postures, but she taught a great deal about attention and awareness.
After six years, Penny encouraged me to start teaching and I attended classes with several other Iyengar teachers to expand my practice. I had a strong desire to free my body of its limitations but I never discovered a way which satisfied me. It was as though I was searching for an elusive or non-existent key.
In 1991 I met Vanda Scaravelli who invited me to become her student. In my first lesson I knew immediately that Vanda was offering me this key. After that I visited her in Italy once or twice a year to learn how to work with the principles she had discovered in her own practice. At Vanda’s house I met Diane Long and recognised in her practice the same freedom that I saw in Vanda. I invited Diane to teach me and my students in London and since then we have been meeting regularly to practise and teach together.

Diane Long has been developing and refining yoga for most of her life. She was born in North Carolina and moved to Italy in the early 1970s. While living in Florence, Vanda Scaravelli invited her to become her student. She was a devoted student of Vanda’s for the next 23 years. This meeting with Vanda introduced her to a new form of consciousness in the study of yoga and body/mind awareness. At Vanda’s urging, Diane began teaching in the late 70’s in Italy and later in Canada, England and the United States.
The intuitive yoga of Diane Long is a progressive physical practice with the intention of leading one to the vital core, the spine, and is based on the concept that the spine divides at the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. It is here that strength grows into lightness. The base of the position is where one is rested and anchored into the earth. Refining the awareness opens the vision to wholeness and harmony, guided by this intention and concept. This becomes a way of being, a form of meditation, which allows for new sensation and a different approach to asana.
This yoga is clearly visible in Diane’s body teachings. In her classes and workshops, she demonstrates and helps participants to experience the particular subtle quality of movement, breath and attention that Vanda taught, working hands on as much as possible with each student.
Diane is now based in Rome teaching regularly in the UK with several visits to the United States and Canada.

Contact improvisation is a dance based on the physics of touch, balance, weight, momentum, flow and resistance. It has been variously described as “an art sport”, “a game with two winners” and “a physical conversation”. Contact dances can range from the quietly meditative to the exuberantly acrobatic, from using little or light touch to sending weight through a partner’s body to fly.

The weekend will begin with visiting some of the fundamentals of the form such as physical listening, organisation of the body, and weight exchange. Then we’ll look at ways to open and expand our dancing, to develop confidence and trust as we take the dance further off balance and higher through the air.
Sunday’s session will be devoted to Skills for Jamming and getting the dances we want. How do we prepare our senses to navigate space through and around other bodies? How do we maintain our sense of self within a myriad of choices?
Working with these skills we’ll develop our ability to be seen, to respond and initiate action – composing in the moment – by letting go of the barriers to our natural, playful, expressive selves.

Cost: w/e workshop £100, limited concessions available at £80, group booking discount on full price available to non-Findhorn residents.

“Wild geese, wild dancing and wonderful people balanced with stillness and relaxation. This has to be one of the best ways to spend Hogmanay in Scotland.” – Brian McMullen

Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms are an accessible and encompassing movement practice. Like the cycle of the seasons, the Rhythms reflect the physical and energetic patterns we find within and all around us. As creatures of habit we often limit our full range of expression, settling into conditioned ways we feel comfortable with. Dancing The Wave®, through Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness, liberates our full potential and nourishes our physical, emotional and mental well-being.

Contact Improvisation is a dance of improvising and partnering based on the physics of touch, balance, weight, momentum, flow and resistance. It tunes our senses to be ready to respond in an ever-shifting dialogue of movement. Sometimes quiet and meditative, sometimes wild and athletic, it is a form open to all bodies and enquiring minds.
“Each dance is a series of on-the-spot decisions. And they are on the spot. The soft skin is alert to the points of contact, signals telling the dancers where they are, orienting them to their partner and the floor… an important aspect of Contact Improvisation is the pleasure of moving, and the pleasure of dancing with somebody in a very spontaneous way.” – Steve Paxton
