Vanda's knowledge developed from initial study with Iyengar and Desikachar. Her own distinctive approach to yoga evolved throughout the rest of her life.
The emphasis of this approach to yoga is not on achieving postures but using them to undo tension and find integration. The practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the parts of the body and between our movements and the breath, the ground and the space around us. Gradually a new network of muscles is brought into use. Then our movements come from the spine and bring us back to the spine and the whole body pulls together. We train our attention so that we can feel more, impose less, and allow the intelligence of the body to reveal itself.Louise Simmons & Mooie Scott
By Rick Nodine
After a string of larger scale works choreographing for the National Theatre (England), Glyndebourne Opera, and a quartet for his own company (Wayfareing Stranger) Nodine presents his small scale and evocative study of childhood, Come to Mamma. This duet features two raucously physical and vocal women who weave a movement poem of wild noise, quiet song and left field humor.“… lightning-fast performance circuitry … it’s riveting to watch him play
Choreography, text and performance: Rosalind Masson
Music by Aaron Jonah Lewis
Rosalind Masson graduated from London Contemporary Dance School in 2006 and now works as a freelance teacher and performer connected to La Nua in Edinburgh, Movement Research in N.Y.C. and Berlin based Labor Gras. This piece was developed in response to a collaboration that disintegrated. First shown as part of Heads Up at Dancebase then Pool at the Traverse 2009. A humorous yet thoughtful solo flagging up issues of identity and female roles.
It is about sharing weight, rolling, suspending, falling, passive and active, energy and awareness.
The Feldenkrais Method, will be a base from which to dance. It uses simple exploratory movements to learn to free ourselves from unhelpful patterns and discover greater physical ease and increased vitality.Simonetta has a knack for helping students transport the self discovery and physical opening which emerges from the gentle Feldenkrias work into the more expansive movements of dance and Contact Improvisation.
Rick's work uses simple choreographed or set movements to give students the technical grounding to safely launch themselves into unknown realms of movement. Gradual accumulation of information and skills will support our dancing together with risk and good humour. Simonetta & Rick have studied Contact Improvisation with the foremost teachers of the art-form. They each have an extensive international performance, choreographic and teaching career. Simonetta is a qualified teacher of the Feldenkrais method and has been teaching dance for twenty years. Rick's performing career includes theatre, dance, and mixed-ability, and has 12 years experience in creating improvised performance.

The return of Diane Long & Sophy Hoare

April 5th - 10th 2011

Yoga with Diane Long and Sophy Hoare
5th – 7th April 2011

Yoga with Diane Long
9th – 10th April 2011

Vanda Scaravelli, who died in Italy in l999 at the age of 9l, may be best known to many yoga students for her influential book Awakening the Spine with its striking photos of her in her 80s performing challenging poses with ease. Vanda’s knowledge developed from initial study with Iyengar and Desikachar. Her own distinctive approach to yoga evolved throughout the rest of her life.

“Diane Long and Sophy Hoare both worked closely with Vanda Scaravelli. Diane was her pupil for 23 years, and Sophy studied with Vanda regularly for 8 years. Sophy and Diane met through Vanda and continue to work and teach together to deepen their practice. Since Vanda’s death in 1999 her legacy has continued through Diane and Sophy. What she gave carries on developing because it was not a set of instructions, but a feeling of curiosity for what the practice can show us.” Ed Fellows

About this approach to yoga:
The emphasis is not on achieving postures but using them to undo tension and find integration. The practice is an ongoing exploration of the relationship between the parts of the body and between our movements and the breath, the ground and the space around us. Gradually a new network of muscles is brought into use. Then our movements come from the spine and bring us back to the spine and the whole body pulls together. We train our attention so that we can feel more, impose less, and allow the intelligence of the body to reveal itself.

The workshop will run between 9am and approximately 12pm each day with an optional afternoon discussions. Between the 5th – 7th April, each morning participants will attend two, 1.5 hour classes – one taught by Diane and one taught by Sophy. The group will be divided into two halves to allow greater contact time with the teachers.
Between the 9th – 11th April, Diane will teach one class to all participants.

Cost: 5th – 7th April with Diane & Sophie £175 (includes one vegetarian meal per day)
Cost: 9th & 10th April with Diane £120 (includes one vegetarian meal per day)
Some daily places may be available at £65 per day (incl. meal)
To book send a 25% deposit

The classes will build on simple physical principles, allowing students to explore and experience their bodies moving in a more profound, joyful and liberating way.
Students will be offered ways to extend and deepen their experience of moving, to practice the skills of dancing in partnership with others and improvising with greater sensitivity to each other and the environment. In recent years Kirstie's focus has been directed towards the art of deep listening within her practice of improvisation.
