About 4×4: Dance, Body & the Environment

Comprised of two artist residencies (4×4 Air) and a ten-day intensive (4×4 LAB), 4×4: Dance, Body and the Environment saw dance artists from across Scotland come together to develop their performance practice, examining their relationship to the natural environment and ecological systems.

4×4 LAB
Split between the Isle of Eigg and the Findhorn Foundation EcoVillage Community (two communities committed to exploring sustainability and low-carbon living), 4×4: LAB took place in March 2014 under the mentorship of Jennifer Monson of iLand, USA.

Open to artists of any dance discipline, 4×4 LAB encouraged artists to work in challenging environmental contexts and non-theatre based locations, critically examining their relationship with their surroundings.

With support from Creative Scotland, Bodysurf Scotland were able to offer ten bursary places to Scottish dance artists. Chosen by a panel, the artists were: Aaron Jeffrey, Caroline Reagh, Dana McPherson, Laura Johnson, Loic Lalande, Paul Henry, Penny Chivas, Sarah Hopfinger, Simone Kenyon and William Thorburn.

The nature of the residency was very open and a lot of time was given to self-orientated practice. I very much took advantage of this time, which gave rise to creating and making some unexpected work/sketches, which challenged my usual practice and allowed me to question my own methodologies.”  4×4 LAB Participant

“Four of us have joined forces to apply for the creation of a children’s performance tour and workshop dealing with ecology, sustainability and environmental issues.” Participant. 4×4 LAB Participant

4×4 AIR
Based at the Universal Hall, Findhorn, 4×4: AIR invited two dance artists to undertake choreographic residencies, exploring the site and immediate surrounding area. Grace Surman and Robbie Synge were chosen by panel, provided with an environmental expert and the space in which to develop work. Both artist residencies were held within the winter months before 4×4 LAB.
